| As we all know, even before organisation of the first social Ganesh festival in Parle in 1920 as also setting up of Parle Social Association on 16 January 1921, the untimely passing away of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak on 1 August 1920 gave a rude shock to his followers. As obvious reaction of the unstincted respect Lokmanya Tilak commanded in the society was mooting of an idea of creating a befitting memorial of Lokmanya in Parle. Sarvashri Vishnu Sakharam Ghate, Waman Ramchandra Herlekar, Sadashiv Malhar Deshpande, Balwant Dattatraya Phansalkar and Narayan Krishna Paranjape were in the fore-front in this movement and after establishment of Parle Social Association the task of creating the memorial was entrusted to it. | ![]() |
The idea of establishing a High School jointly by Marathi speaking and Gujarathi speaking residents could not materialize due to cold response from Gujarathi Kelavani Mandal. At that stage Sarvashri Visnu Balkrishna Paranjape, Trimbak Moreshwar Pardhi, Bhaskar Ganesh Bhide and Gopal Ramchandra Phatak volunteered to shoulder this responsibility. This led establishment of Parle Tilak Vidyalaya on 9 June 1921. However, while finalizing the constitution of the Vidyalaya, a controversy arose about giving representation to the representatives of Tilak Smark Mandal on the governing body of the Vidyalaya and the governing body members took a rigid and non co-operative stand. However, Tilak Smarak Mandal whose mass member base represented the economically weak middle class population decided not to press the matter further and to allow the Vidyalaya to operate as an institute run by a chosen few but to strive further to achieve the goal of creating a befitting memorial of Lokmanya Tilak.
Under the leadership of Sarvashri Gopal Sadashiv Ghotikar, Trimbak Mahadeo Limaye, Waman Ramchandra Herlekar, Purushottam Vinayak Joshi, Sadashiv malhar Deshpande, Balvant Dattatraya Phansalkar and Gopal Ramchandra Phatak, Tilak Smarak Mandal succeeded in recovering Mandal's funds invested in vidyalsya and passed a resolution in its meeting held on 6 January 1923 to the effect that a social institution by name Lokmanya Seva Sangh, Parle be established to further the ideals of Lokmanya Tilak of creating social awareness and serving the cause of social service to the extend possible and to erect a building at some central location in Parle, thereby giving a concrete shape to the Sangh's activites and meeting the lang stand need for an accommodation for conducting cultural activities.
The proposal took a concrete shape by acquiring a plot of land admeasing 1600 sq.yards. The meeting held on 11 March 1923 formally adopted the resolution establishing Lokmanya Seva Sangh and the institution came in existence. The maiden managing Committee of the sangh was formed with Sarvashri Gopal Ramchandra Phatak as President, Gopal sadashiv Ghotikar as Vice-President, Sadashiv Malhar Deshande as Secretary shankar Siddheshwar Kunte as Treasurer and Sarvashri Ganesh Vinayak Chitre, Purushottam Joshi, Narayan Krishna Paranjape, Dattatraya Atmaram Patkar, Balvant Dattatraya Phansalkar, Trimbak Mahadeo Limaye, Dattatrya Ganesh Vaidya, Jagannath Kashinath Soman and Waman Ramchandra Herlekar as members. Of these Sarvashri Gopal Ramchandra Phatakm Trimbak mahadeo Limaye and Sadashiv Malhar Deshpande were elected as Trustees of the Sangh.
