Disha Karnabaddhir Vidyalaya

Disha Karnabaddhir Vidyalaya was started in year 1979 to cater to the needs of the hearing handicapped children of Mumbai’s western suburbs. The school was started with five students and one teacher. Today, it is a government recognized school for deaf and we have over 20 students in the age group of 3-15 years, studying from KG to 7th class. . After completing 7th class, a student is expected to join a school of normal students from 8th standard onwards. We have 3000 square feet of space available for running the school.

Key milestones

  • June 1981 — School got provisional recognition from Social Welfare Department of Maharashtra Government
  • June 1990 — Government recognition on permanent basis
  • November 1990 — School received a substantial donation from the Associated Cable Private Ltd., Mumbai. As desired by the Donors of the school, it is since then, named as Disha Karnabadhir Vidyalaya

Objectives

  • Strengthen the language ability of students through training in reading, writing and pronunciation
  • Develop their confidence for conversation
  • Remove the feeling of helplessness arising out of their handicap
  • Make them bold enough to move freely in the society
  • Bring forth their hidden talent by organizing and encouraging them to participate in various competitions
  • Impart vocational education to enable them to earn and learn
  • Make them self reliant and self dependent in life
